HB Public Law is committed to developing its staff and has commissioned a bespoke management development programme.
All staff are encouraged to take up a variety of professional development training opportunities. These include attending internally delivered seminars; attending courses and webinars offered by external solicitor firms and barristers’ chambers through the London Boroughs Legal Alliance and Lawyers in Local Government; participating in the delivery of training to clients.
HB Public Law also offers a comprehensive training programme to qualification as a Solicitor and support to qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive/CILEX Lawyer/ CILEX Advanced Paralegal.
Supporting qualification as a solicitor
For several years the Practice has offered a two-year trainee solicitor programme. Several trainees have been successful, upon qualification as a solicitor, in obtaining a role with the Practice.
Alongside day-to-day supervision within each team, the trainee solicitors have monthly meetings with H B Public Law’s Training Principal, who reviews the overall progress of the individual’s training.
Preparation is underway for the Practice to move to offer qualifying work experience for those applicants seeking to be admitted as a solicitor under the new SRA training arrangements.
Legal apprenticeships
HB Public Law has supported junior staff who demonstrate a commitment to the Practice to develop legal skills under an apprenticeship.
CILEX now offers new paralegal and lawyer apprenticeship routes. The Practice is consulting with CILEX and colleagues in local government to develop an apprenticeship more closely aligned with the breadth of legal work undertaken by lawyers in local government.
HB Public Law is also offering the opportunity to established legal support staff to undertake an apprenticeship in Business Administration.
